An intriguing cross-disciplinary performance is set to take center stage at the upcoming Tallinn Fringe Festival. Pianist Matteo Ramon Arevalos and reciter Arashk Azizi are joining forces for Paradise Lost, a 60-minute immersive performance that bridges 17th-century epic poetry with original contemporary piano composition.
Poetry and Sound in Continuous Dialogue
Rather than a straight audiobook-style reading, Paradise Lost is crafted as a live duet between word and key. The project draws directly from John Milton’s 1667 blank-verse masterpiece, tracing Lucifer’s dramatic fall from Heaven, his descent into Hell, and his relentless campaign to orchestrate the downfall of humanity.
Matching the tension of Milton’s verse is Arevalos’s piano cycle La Folia. Taking its name from one of the oldest remembered European musical themes, historically associated with madness, passion, and wild dance, the music weaves beneath and alongside Azizi’s spoken-word delivery. At moments, the piano acts as an emotional backdrop; at others, it surges forward to drive the drama of the narrative.
