Taste with Your Ears: The Sound of Tasting Series

Composer and pianist Arashk Azizi transforms sensory tasting into live musical storytelling across three distinct events for Tallinn Fringe.

What does a rich, smoky single malt sound like on piano keys? Can the subtle botanical complexity of a zero-proof craft brew be expressed through harmony and key changes?

Tunitemusic music productions and pianist-composer Arashk Azizi are set to explore the intersection of auditory and gustatory sensation with a three-part concert series presented as part of Tallinn Fringe Festival.

Ditching conventional tasting lectures on tannins, aging, or ABV percentages, the trilogy invites audiences into an intimate environment where every pour is accompanied by a custom 7-to-10-minute live “piano poem.” Part pre-composed motif, part live improvisation influenced by the energy of the room, each piece translates flavor notes into real-time sonic narratives.

The Sensory Concert Series

1. The Sound of Wine

Opening the series, The Sound of Wine pairs a flight of four curated red wines with custom piano compositions. As guests savor each glass, Azizi translates the body, finish, and character of each bottle into fluid, evocative piano movements.

2. The Sound of Whisky

Delving into deeper tonal textures, The Sound of Whisky explores the warmth, peat, and complex barrel notes of four fine whiskies. The performance captures the intensity and lingering finish of aged single malts through rich harmonic structures and dynamic improvisation.

3. The Sound of Zero

Collaborating with Sietse at Nullijook—Tallinn’s specialized space for alcohol-free craftsmanship—The Sound of Zero celebrates non-alcoholic mixology. Featuring three complex, botanically brewed creations, Sietse introduces the craftsmanship behind each pour before Azizi paints its botanical notes into a delicate musical canvas.
