A meditative encounter with the “new simplicity”
On two consecutive evenings this spring the Estonian capital and Tartu will host a concert that fuses the austere beauty of Arvo Pärt’s most beloved works with the ancient resonance of gongs. Piano, violin and “archaic” gong will play pieces such as Fratres, Für Alina and Spiegel im Spiegel, inviting listeners into a space where silence is as important as sound.
Pärt himself has described his music as “tintinnabuli” – “small bells” – and the event’s unusual instrumentation echoes this idea, turning the chamber set into a chapel of sound therapy. The performers will explore each phrase as a breath, pausing to let the vibrations settle and letting the silence speak.

The stars of the evening
| Instrument | Artist | About |
|---|---|---|
| Piano | Auli Teppe | One of Estonia’s brightest young pianists, Teppe gained national fame on Classical Stars and has performed with the ERSO, EMTA and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra. He has taken Pärt’s piano repertoire from Tallinn to New York. |
| Violin | Leena Laas | A seasoned performer with 25 years of baroque and classical experience, Laas has toured Scandinavia, Germany and Russia, and teaches at Keila and Nõmme Music Schools. |
| Gong & Sound Therapy | Lilia Märtmaa & Denis Vinogradov | Founders of the Healing Sounds Center, they bring expertise in sound therapy and master facilitation, enriching the concert with the gong’s harmonic overtones. |
The gong – a sonic labyrinth
A gong is not just a percussion instrument; it is an idiophone that generates “natural white noise” and a spectrum of subtle harmonic overtones. When struck, its waves intertwine, producing combination tones that can be perceived as bells, drums, or even choirs. These emergent sounds are believed to tap into the listener’s auditory cortex, creating a personal soundscape that changes with each heartbeat.
By integrating this ancient instrument, the concert offers a rare blend of modern minimalism and ancient sound healing, a journey that promises to leave the audience in a state of “sacral calm”.
