Matteo Ramon Arevalos Illuminates Satie’s Gnossiennes

On 17th of May 2026, the world of contemporary classical music will hear a fresh, almost mystical take on one of Satie’s most enigmatic series of works: the Gnossiennes. The Estonian label Tunitemusic, has partnered with award‑winning Italian pianist Matteo Ramon Arevalos to release an all‑solo piano album that promises to bring new soul to these seven “dance‑like” pieces that were composed in the decade following the Sarabandes and Gymnopédies.

Satie’s Gnossiennes, so called from the French gnos (knowledge) and the mythical gnosis, were written between 1888 and 1894, a period when the composer was increasingly drawn to occultism, Rosicrucianism, and the Gnostic Church of France. Their free‑time, lack of bar lines, and experimental harmonic language made them a precursor to his later “Danses gothiques” and, in many ways, a bridge between his salon salon songs and the more avant‑garde works of the 1910s.

Matteo Ramon Arevalos, who has already garnered acclaim for his emotive interpretations of Romantic and contemporary repertoire, has described his approach to the Gnossiennes as meditative, with a deep emotional arc that lets the listener walk through the labyrinth that the french composer, Erik Satie has imagined. The Matteo’s technique, marked by delicate pedal work, subtle rubato, and a tone that is simultaneously intimate and expansive, provides a stark contrast to the often stark, almost sparse, interpretations that have dominated the discography of Satie’s piano works.

Why Satie: Gnossiennes by Matteo Ramon Arevalos Matters

  • A historical anniversary: The album arrives exactly on Satie’s 145th birthday, inviting listeners to celebrate his legacy in a new light.
  • A fresh perspective: While many have recorded the Gymnopédies and Sarabandes, the Gnossiennes remain less explored. Arevalos’ version brings a “new soul” to the pieces, shedding fresh light on their occult and esoteric roots.
  • Cross‑cultural collaboration: The partnership between an Estonian label and an Italian pianist exemplifies the global reach of classical music today.

The Tracks

Each of the seven Gnossiennes carries its own haunting narrative. From the languid melancholy of Gnossienne No. 1 to the almost ritualistic rhythm of Gnossienne No. 5, Arevalos guides listeners through a sonic journey that echoes Satie’s fascination with labyrinths, rituals, and hidden knowledge.

Where to listen

The digital album will be available on all major streaming platforms from 17th of May.
