The XXXIII edition of the Viljandi Folk Music Festival will run from Thursday, July 23 to Sunday, July 26, 2026, on the historic hills of Viljandi Castle and in the town’s charming streets. The event has cemented itself as one of the largest folk festivals in the Baltic and Nordic region, attracting audiences eager to celebrate Estonia’s cultural legacy.
Over four days, festival-goers will enjoy more than 75 concerts spread across five outdoor stages and three indoor venues. The lineup features nearly 50 performers from Estonia and abroad, accompanied by workshops in playing, dancing and singing that invite the public to immerse themselves in the folk tradition. A volunteer force of 200 has been mobilised to support the smooth running of the event, while the 20,000 visitors already booked a glimpse of the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.
“At its core, the Viljandi festival is a living testament to how tradition can adapt and thrive in contemporary life,” said a festival spokesperson. “We aim to keep our musical mother tongue alive, strengthen our national character, and bring the community together in celebration.”
Organizers emphasised the festival’s philosophy of honoring heritage and local identity. “It started spreading in the early 1990s, and it continues to evolve,” the spokesperson added. “We value the spiritual values built over centuries, and we channel them into a modern, inclusive experience.”
