Have you ever spent time asking yourself for the perfect music to play when plotting your next theft of the King's horses? The day is already dark and stormy, but the horses are out grazing, and you know the horses won't get taken back to the stables because you drugged the guards already. There's a sleeping potion you've added to their stew.
You and your men share looks as you wait for the eclipse to block out the sun and for the King's men to fall asleep. Once they do, you gather up the King's horses and ride them off to find new and more exciting lives of robbing people with you. That's what Eclipse (Jon Kennedy Remix) by Simonne Draper sounds like. It sounds like more than a robbery. It sounds like an entire epic plot in which you get to make something originally not yours belong to you and your crew very soon.
Eclipse (The Jon Kennedy Remix) by Simonne Draper
The best way to dive into the remix of this song is to look at both Simonne Draper, the classically trained artist who originally put together Eclipse, and Jon Kennedy, the trip-hop producer who remixed it into its current version.
Simonne Draper is an acoustic and classical composer from the Czech Republic. A former law student, she is blessed with a true love of music. She has been able to work with Prague Composers and win awards in both Europe and the United States. Jon Kennedy is a long-time electronic producer who specializes in drumming and playing new music with trip-hop artists. Currently the head of his own label the Jon Kennedy Federation, Kennedy has done a bit of everything there is to do in electronic music since starting out in 2001.
We're not stealing... We're liberating The King's horses
When you listen to Eclipse (Jon Kennedy Remix) knowing more about the individuals that made it you can hear the way the music has been blended in this remix. More than the sum of its part, Jon Kennedy has stripped back the pieces of the song that came out on the original version of Eclipse back in February of 2022. It only took a year and three months to put out a new version of the song that fit the sensibilities of both artists.
The cello/synth is gone. The gasps of grinding metal pieces are added. The bassline is thicker and sicker and there are some added "Heys" in there too for good measure. As Jon Kennedy is a high-caliber remixer having released over 60 tracks, his bringing his abilities over to Draper's Eclipse I think has made a good song much greater than its original. As you begin to close your eyes and prepare your own adventures to steal horses, battle evil wizards, or test your mettle at your favorite pub, you can ride this piece of music therapy to its most logical conclusion. Be the hero of your own story.
