The sweet arpeggios of a violin, playing softly, create a rural and emotional scene that opens the album Rural TV Classical by the brilliant composer Thomas Hewitt Jones. An album of 15 orchestral pieces, it invites the listener into a world that feels both pastoral and cinematic, blending timeless classical traditions with a contemporary twist.

From the outset, with tracks like “Aerial View” and “Countryside Vista,” Jones captures the serenity and charm of rural life. The music in this album resonates with the style of the early Romantic and late Classical eras, yet carries a whisper of modern minimalism. Especially in pieces like “Farmland,” this influence becomes tangible, seamlessly blending classical roots with the rhythmic subtleties of composers like Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt.

Jones’s work remains deeply connected to the greats—his compositions evoke the warmth and richness of Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Yet, there’s an unmistakable contemporary (or maybe I should say soundtrack) quality to his music, reminiscent of Michael Giacchino or Danny Elfman. This duality creates an experience that feels equally at home in a concert hall or as the emotional backdrop to a film. I wanna say if Danny Elfman would rewrite Beethoven’s pastoral symphony, it would probably sound something like Thomas’s music.

Tracks such as “Feeding the Chickens” and “Children on the Farm” bring light-hearted energy with its pizzicato strings, while “Cleaning the Stables” shifts into more fantasy territory.

The album stands out with its intricate layering and rhythmic drive, demonstrating Jones’s exceptional talent for orchestration. His ability to craft lush, harmonious textures—often doubling strings with horns for softness—speaks to his mastery as a composer.

What makes Rural TV Classical truly special is its uplifting and welcoming mood. Each piece feels like a window into the countryside, brimming with life and nostalgia. Whether it’s the cheerful optimism of “New Day on the Farm” or the peaceful introspection of staccato strings in “The Outdoors,” the album effortlessly evokes the beauty of rural living.

Thomas Hewitt Jones’s gift lies in his ability to bridge tradition and modernity. His orchestral palette captures the listener’s imagination, blending classical richness with fresh, contemporary influences. The result is an album that feels timeless, warm, and utterly charming.

Rural TV Classical is a delightful addition to Jones’s vast and diverse catalog. With its friendly and vibrant soundscapes, it’s an album that will transport listeners to a place of tranquility and joy—a true celebration of rural life in music.
