A Six‑Year‑Old Legacy Gets a New Pulse
The Scrapyard series, born six years ago as a tongue‑in‑cheek homage to the raw, DIY ethos of lo‑fi culture, has become the ensemble’s signature platform for pushing the boundaries of contemporary music. The next instalment, slated for the end of April at the Linnahall, promises to be the most daring yet. Audiences will hear compositions that fuse “handmade instruments” and intentionally “imperfect” sonic elements with contemporary classical structures, creating a sonic collage that feels at once nostalgic and forward‑looking.
“Scrapyard isn’t just about the music. It’s about the entire experience,” says lead composer and violinist Anna K. “The instruments are part of the story—each crack, each buzz tells a line in the narrative.”
Multimedia Meets Movement
What sets this season apart is the ensemble’s decision to bring performance art into the fold. Musicians are not only playing their instruments; they are choreographed into a fluid ensemble that blurs the line between performer and dancer. “Movement is integral to how we interpret these pieces,” explains conductor Jaanus L. “We use expanded capabilities of each instrument, bowing with a drumstick, plucking a resonator with a tape measure, to create visual and sonic textures that evolve in real time.”
The concert will also feature a collaboration with local multimedia artist Mikael S., who will overlay projection mapping and interactive LED installations that respond to the performers’ gestures. The result is a living, breathing stage that invites the audience to participate, even if only through their own reflections.
A Prize‑Worthy Ensemble
The Ensemble for New Music Tallinn has already been hailed as one of the most adventurous groups in the Baltic and Nordic regions. Founded in 2013, they have built a reputation for “alternative intonations and microtonal music” that re‑examines the limits of Western tonality. Their recent accolades include the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Ensemble Prize 2026, a testament to their global impact.
In an interview with The New York Times, ensemble founder Markus P. noted, “Winning the Ernst von Siemens Prize reaffirms our belief that the most exciting music is that which is unafraid to experiment. Scrapyard is a laboratory for that experimentation.”
