Arvo Pärt’s “Alina” Debuts on Vinyl for First Time

ECM Records has announced that Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt’s seminal 1999 album “Alina” will now be available on vinyl, a first for the work that has become a cornerstone of contemporary classical music. This contemporary classical new release is packaged in a minimalist cardboard sleeve and includes a four‑page insert with Hermann Conen’s original liner notes, offering listeners a fresh tactile experience of Pärt’s early tintinnabuli style.

The album, originally issued as an LP in 1999, captured the moment Pärt and producer Manfred Eicher convened in Frankfurt’s Festeburgkirche in July 1995. Together with violinist Vladimir Spivakov, cellist Dietmar Schwalke, and pianists Alexander Malter and Sergej Bezrodny, they recorded the haunting “Für Alina” and “Spiegel im Spiegel.” The result is an intimate portrait of Pärt’s “white‑light” aesthetic, a musical prism that he described as “the spirit of the listener.”

Critics have long celebrated the record’s economy of sound. A 2005 New York Times review lauded it as “another standout CD for those new to Mr. Pärt’s work, capturing his early tintinnabuli style at its most pared down and essential.” Gramophone’s 2005 review called the album “the voice of internal exile, self‑communing and highly personal but wholly accessible for anyone willing to listen.” The review warned, however, that once the listener has experienced “Alina,” all subsequent music may suddenly sound like noise – a risk worth taking.

The vinyl edition is more than a collector’s item. In an era where streaming dominates, it invites listeners to engage with the music in a more deliberate, physical way. The cardboard sleeve, paired with Conen’s concise commentary, serves as a reminder of the era when recordings were meant to be studied, not merely consumed.

For contemporary classical fans and vinyl enthusiasts alike, this release offers an opportunity to revisit a pivotal moment in Arvo Pärt’s career and to experience the quiet power of “Alina” in a format that emphasizes presence over convenience.

You can order the vinyl edition online from ECM records website.
