In a moment that reverberated through Tallinn’s concert halls, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO) marked its centennial with a glittering opening concert that blended the familiar with the deeply local. Though I was unable to attend in person, the performance was available online via ERR, allowing me to witness the celebrations from the comfort of my apartment.
The program, conducted by the seasoned Olari Elts, opened with Heino Eller’s symphonic poem “Koit” (Dawn). Eller’s work, which has become a staple of Estonian repertoire, set an immediate tone of national pride and lyrical optimism. Elts’ nuanced baton work lifted the orchestra’s tone, weaving a tapestry of color that made the first minutes feel like a sunrise over the Baltic Sea.
Following the Estonian premiere, the concert featured a collaboration with South‑Korean pianist Yekwon Sunwoo. A graduate of both the Curtis Institute of Music and Juilliard, Sunwoo had risen to global prominence after winning the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Together with ERSO, he performed Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor; a piece famously dubbed a “musical love letter” to Clara Schumann, who originally premiered it. The duo’s interpretation was both tender and technically brilliant, and it underscored the international reach of the orchestra.
The evening closed with Ludwig van Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No. 5 in C minor. The powerful opening motif, once again heard in the hall, felt almost ceremonial, as if the orchestra was bowing to a century of musical heritage and a future that continues to promise.
ERSO’s centennial season will not be a quiet milestone. A South‑Korean tour is already on the calendar, featuring Schumann and Beethoven works alongside Estonian composer Tõnu Kõrvits’s “Hymns to the Northern Lights.” In early October, the orchestra will appear at the Festival TubIN under the baton of Mihhail Gerts with violinist Hans Christian Aavik. ERR’s culture portal will also stream the full lineup of ERSO concerts throughout the fall, ensuring that audiences worldwide can share in the music.
For me, watching the online broadcast felt like joining a living tradition. ERSO’s 100th season is not merely a historical marker, it is a testament to the resilience and vibrancy of Estonian culture, resonating well beyond national borders.
