Beethoven: Violin Sonatas Op. 12 & Op. 24 – New Release

The first volume in an ambitious series of Beethoven’s complete violin sonatas has arrived, featuring a fresh partnership between soloist Alina Ibragimova and pianist Cédric Tiberghien. The recording marks Ibragimova’s debut as a solo artist for the prestigious BIS label and offers listeners a historically informed take on the classics.

A Sound of History

Ibragimova, known for her work with the Chiaroscuro Quartet, plays a gut‑stringed 1738 Pietro Guarneri violin – a choice that harks back to the sonorities Beethoven himself would have heard. Tiberghien accompanies on a fortepiano modeled after a 1794 Viennese instrument, giving the dialogue between piano and violin an unmistakably period‑accurate character.

Beethoven: Violin Sonatas Op. 12 & Op. 24

Program Overview

The disc opens with the trio of Violin Sonatas, Op. 12, Beethoven’s first published sonatas that helped establish his reputation in Vienna. Originally written “for harpsichord or fortepiano with violin accompaniment,” these works now feature an equal partnership between the two instruments, echoing Mozart’s chamber‑music style.

The album concludes with the beloved Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24 – the “Spring” Sonata. Its lyrical warmth and effortless charm make it one of Beethoven’s most beloved chamber works and a perfect showcase for the intimate dialogue between violin and fortepiano.

Ibragimova: A Rising Virtuoso

Born in Russia, Ibragimova trained at the Moscow Gnessin School, the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal College of Music in London. She has studied under Natasha Boyarsky, Gordan Nikolitch and Christian Tetzlaff, and has performed at the BBC Proms, Salzburg, Verbier, MDR Musiksommer, Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw, and with orchestras such as the Philharmonia, London Symphony, and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.

Why This New Classical Release Matters

By combining meticulous historical research with vivid musicianship, Ibragimova and Tiberghien breathe new life into well‑known works. The recording sets the tone for the forthcoming volumes of the cycle, promising a fresh, illuminating perspective on Ludwig van Beethoven’s violin sonatas for the next generation of listeners.
