The Early Years of Eduard Tubin – New Release by ERSO

The Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO) and conductor Mihhail Gerts have released a remarkable new recording dedicated to the formative years of one of Estonia’s most important composers, Eduard Tubin (1905–1982). Released by Orchid Classics, The Early Years of Eduard Tubin shines a light on the composer’s early creative development, revealing the foundations of a musical voice that would later establish him as one of the twentieth century’s most significant symphonists.

While Tubin is internationally known for his ten symphonies, operas, concertos, and orchestral works, this new album focuses on the period before he became a towering figure of Estonian music. The recording presents three works that trace the emergence of his artistic identity: the Suite on Estonian Motifs (ETW 13), the Symphony No. 2 “Legendary”, and two early piano preludes composed in 1926 and performed by Mihhail Gerts himself.

At the heart of the album stands Symphony No. 2 “Legendary” (1937), a work often regarded as the composition through which Tubin found his mature symphonic voice. The symphony moves through contrasting landscapes of mystery, drama, and reflection before arriving at a powerful and energetic conclusion. Decades after its premiere, it remains one of the defining achievements of Estonian orchestral music.

The Early Years of Eduard Tubin

Equally fascinating is the inclusion of the Suite on Estonian Motifs, Tubin’s first large-scale orchestral work. Drawing inspiration from Estonian folk traditions, the composition demonstrates the young composer’s ability to transform national musical material into sophisticated symphonic textures. ERSO has previously highlighted the importance of this score, describing it as an early indication of the extraordinary talent that would soon flourish in Tubin’s later symphonies and orchestral masterpieces.

The album concludes with two piano preludes written when Tubin was still a student. Though modest in scale compared to the orchestral works, they offer an intimate glimpse into the composer’s earliest musical language and reveal the lyrical sensitivity that would remain a hallmark of his music throughout his career.

Born in Tartu County in 1905, Tubin emerged from the influential Estonian composition school of Heino Eller and later became one of the country’s most celebrated cultural figures. His music was deeply shaped by Estonian folklore, Nordic landscapes, and a strong sense of narrative expression. Following his escape to Sweden during the Second World War, Tubin continued composing in exile, producing many of the works that cemented his international reputation.

For conductor Mihhail Gerts, the project represents a continuation of his longstanding engagement with Tubin’s music and Estonian symphonic repertoire. Together with ERSO, he brings both precision and emotional depth to these performances, allowing listeners to hear not only the young Tubin but also the seeds of the composer he would eventually become.

At a time when international interest in Baltic and Nordic classical music continues to grow, The Early Years of Eduard Tubin offers a valuable opportunity to rediscover the beginnings of a composer whose influence on Estonian musical culture remains profound. More than a historical document, the recording is a vivid portrait of artistic emergence—capturing the moment when a young composer began shaping a musical language that would resonate far beyond Estonia’s borders.
