Tallinn & Tartu – 11 – 19 April 2026
Estonia’s flagship contemporary music showcase, Estonian Music Days (EMD), returns this spring with a fresh and thought‑provoking theme: “Stories.” Over nine days, the country’s largest premiere festival will span Tallinn’s historic concert halls, Tartu’s vibrant cultural venues, and a variety of unconventional spaces, from city streets to school auditoriums, offering an immersive exploration of how music narrates our past, present, and future.

Thematic Vision
Artistic directors Helena Tulve and Timo Steiner, with Märt‑Matis Lill steering the Tartu programme, frame the festival around the manifold meanings of the Estonian word lugu (“story”). Tulve explains, “Stories carry both personal and collective weight. They help us weigh contemporary values, identify what remains relevant, and set new goals.” The festival thus becomes a living laboratory where ancient myths, contemporary struggles, and speculative futures intersect on the stage.
International Colour & New Collaborations
EMD will feature guest performers from Ireland, Germany, and Iceland, enriching its programme with a cosmopolitan palette. Highlights include:
- RAM collaborating with the Estonian Electronic Music Society Ensemble.
- A joint production by the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and Astra Irene Susi Music Theatre.
- A unique sound‑space experience by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and the Icelandic Cantoque Ensemble in St. John’s Church.
