Martin Lloyd Howard‘s Selene, is a new original work for solo classical guitar, released on 31 December 2025. Written in G minor, an uncommon key for the instrument, the piece is inspired by a moonscape painting by the artist’s wife and takes its name from Selene, the Ancient Greek goddess of the moon.
The piece unfolds as a quiet nocturne, evoking pale moonlight, drifting clouds, and a sense of suspended time. There is an intimacy here that feels almost cinematic, yet rooted firmly in the classical guitar tradition.
The recording was made at Audio Sorcery Studios, with Paul Midcalf as recording engineer, capturing the distinctive voice of Howard’s fifty-year-old hand-built classical guitar. Its sound, warm, crystalline, and gently aged, plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere of the piece. The raw, unfiltered character of the guitar’s sound, captured with a natural closeness that reveals every nuance of touch, resonance, and decay, lends the piece an intense sense of intimacy.
With Selene, Martin Lloyd Howard continues his mission to help fill a noticeable gap in today’s instrumental landscape: original nylon-string guitar music that balances classical form with contemporary accessibility. Trained originally as a classical guitarist, Howard has expanded his language through folk, blues, and rock, and this hybrid sensibility subtly informs the work without ever overpowering its contemplative core.
The recurring motif, subtly reshaped through nuanced performance, creates a tranquil nocturnal atmosphere, evoking the stillness of night and the soft, shifting presence of moonlight.
Howard is known for his focus on original instrumental music, both solo and ensemble-based, across electric and acoustic guitars. He has also collaborated with several artists, most notably Mark Johnson, leader of the Kent-based band The Midnight River Crew.
