On 16 January 2026, a bold and evocative new album titled Colors of Bach emerged, a project that reframes the Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach through the lens of 21st-century creativity while honoring his profound musical architecture.
Led by the dynamic Norwegian violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing, with expressive ensemble work by the Norwegian String Quintet and imaginative arranging and piano contributions from Tim Allhoff, Colors of Bach traverses 23 tracks that breathe contemporary color into some of Bach’s most beloved melodies.
What makes this project especially compelling is its fusion of reverence and reinvention. The album refracts canonical Bach themes, from arias and partita preludes to chorales and chorale-based variations, through new textures and chamber contexts. Playful, meditative, slyly experimental and deeply emotional, the arrangements shift mood and perspective while preserving the architectural integrity of the original material.

Highlights include Tim Allhoff’s tender, lyrical reimagining of the Air from Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite, Jarkko Riihimäki’s spirited rework of Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g’mein, and Jan-Peter Klöpfel’s richly layered take on Jesu, joy of man’s desiring. The interplay of violin, string quintet, piano, even accordion and harpsichord, reintroduces these timeless themes with warmth and immediacy.
Colors of Bach is an invitation to hear Bach afresh, to perceive the emotional breadth of his music as if through a prism of modern color and nuance. Listeners familiar with the originals will find new facets to explore; those newer to Bach are met with an accessible, deeply expressive entry point.
Available on major streaming platforms now, this release underscores a crucial idea: classical music is a living, evolving art, one that speaks across centuries when shaped with both respect and a fearless creative spirit.
