One of the United Kingdom’s most iconic concert hall instruments has been brought back to life, marking a major moment for organ music and classical performance. The restored Britton Organ, a Grade II-listed pipe organ with more than 5,000 pipes housed at Bristol Beacon, was unveiled at a sold-out opening recital performed by celebrated organist Anna Lapwood.

The instrument, originally built by Harrison & Harrison in the mid-20th century and towering 14 metres tall, had been silent since 2018 while undergoing painstaking restoration as part of Bristol Beacon’s long-term refurbishment project. During that period, its thousands of pipes, pneumatics, and console were carefully dismantled, cleaned, and re-voiced to suit the newly updated acoustics of the venue. Its revival was spearheaded by the In the Pipes heritage project, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Jack and Monica Britton Trust, which also renamed the organ in honour of the generous donors.
Anna Lapwood, a dynamic organist, conductor, broadcaster, and social-media presence, captivated the sold-out audience with a program that showcased the newly restored organ’s vast expressive range. Though the full set list at the opening event was steeped in tradition, Lapwood’s performance style bridges classical rigor with contemporary accessibility, a blend that has made her one of the most influential young figures in the organ world today.
The restored Britton Organ’s return to public performance is significant for multiple reasons. Not only does it bring back one of Britain’s most important concert instruments after years of silence, it also ensures that organ music — in all its complexity and emotional breadth, will continue to play a central role in Bristol’s cultural life. The restoration is already inspiring community engagement initiatives, including organ scholarships and opportunities for young musicians to learn the instrument.
The instrument’s official return comes in its 70th anniversary year, adding historical resonance to the already profound sonic event. As the Bristol Beacon continues its 2025/26 orchestral season, the Britton Organ will feature in additional concerts, including community and orchestral collaborations that underscore the organ’s versatility across styles and audiences.
For lovers of organ music and classical performance alike, the restored Britton Organ’s triumphant comeback, led by Anna Lapwood’s charismatic musicianship, marks a renewal of both heritage and forward-looking artistry in the world of concert organ music.
