Eyes Like Torches at the Gate features two solo guitar pieces by the Polish composer and guitarist Ratyński. The music is striking, expressive, and rhythmically intricate. I was especially drawn to the way different rhythmic patterns emerge and evolve, adding depth and emotional resonance to each piece.

The first track begins with a bright, almost waltz-like energy and a catchy, upbeat mood. At first, it feels deceptively simple—but soon, rhythmic shifts begin to appear. The piece is introduced with an 8-beat rhythm with a 3-3-2 accentuation. It’s not a common rhythmic pattern, yet Ratyński uses it in a way that feels completely natural. The melody develops fluidly, and new rhythmic variations begin to emerge from it.

Soon, we hear another 8-beat cycle broken into 2-2-2-2-2-2-4—playful and unexpected. What’s most impressive is how Ratyński weaves these patterns together, playing between them, combining and shifting them while maintaining a melodic flow so smooth that the rhythmic complexity only becomes evident if you actively count the beats. Other intriguing rhythmic figures such as 3-2-3 and 3-2-2 show up as well, the latter which genuinely gave me goosebumps.

The second piece shifts to a more subtle and introspective tone. Its rhythm is freer, more fluid—less bound by strict meter and more focused on atmosphere. It brought to my mind the works of Francisco Tárrega, with a sense of romanticism and gentle melancholy. This composition feels like a graceful and sensitive beauty, yet somehow tinged with unspoken sorrow. It’s a sentimental statement, as if the music is smiling while hiding a deeper pain.

Of course, Eyes Like Torches at the Gate is more than just a technical display of guitar mastery—it's a journey through emotional landscapes shaped by departure, change, and longing. Ratyński doesn’t just compose music; he tells a wordless story that resonates with the universal human experience of searching for meaning, home, or connection. Whether it’s through intricate polyrhythms or moments of quiet beauty, these two pieces invite listeners to reflect on the inner journeys we all undertake. Perhaps, as the composer suggests, the destination isn’t a place at all, but something—or someone—we glimpse in the light of another’s eyes.
