Despite his young age, Teodor delivered a compelling rendition of “Õpetaja”, a complex piece originally by ’90s Estonian band Genialistid, in front of an audience that included President Alar Karis and Estonia’s music community. Backed by the esteemed Eesti Rahvusmeeskoor male voice choir and the Estonian Dream Big Band, the young singer’s confident performance captured hearts and became one of the most memorable highlights of the evening.
In candid remarks after the show, Teodor shared that performing before the president brought some stage jitters “I even sweated because it was so awkward,” he told Kroonika, but his love of music and dedication shined through. The moment also fulfilled his dream of meeting his musical hero, rapper Tommy Cash, who praised him warmly and encouraged his future creative journey.
Teodor’s musical roots run deep: his mother is Estonian pianist Kärt Ruubel, and his father, violist and conductor Xandi van Dijk, works extensively across Europe, a familial foundation clearly reflected in the boy’s early artistry.
The gala concert, part of the celebrations for Estonia’s 108th Independence Day, featured a rich program of performers spanning choirs, orchestras, soloists, and ensembles, and was followed by a festive reception at the Estonia Concert Hall.
This charming, breakout moment from Teodor van Dijk is a sign of vibrant continuity in Estonia’s musical culture and the powerful role of young voices in shaping its artistic future.
