After more than 500 years since its founding, King’s College Cambridge is preparing to introduce its first-ever all-female choral group. This new ensemble is set to debut next year and will join the ranks of the prestigious King’s College Choir and the mixed-voice King’s Voices, which was created in 1997 to provide women with a place in the college’s choral tradition.

According to The Times, a recent job posting for the college’s new assistant director of music, Australian conductor and composer Owen Elsley, highlights the role’s focus on developing an all-female chamber choir that will perform a diverse repertoire beyond the traditional chapel services.

King’s College Choir, established in the 15th century, remains an iconic institution known worldwide for its broadcasts and recordings. However, it continues to exclude women and girls, a policy that has sparked debate and criticism in recent years.

In 2022, students formed the King’s Women and Marginalised Genders (KWMG) choir to advocate for greater inclusion. Co-founder Lucy Gabb expressed disappointment about the new choir if it does not challenge the college’s longstanding selective traditions, emphasizing the need for women and girls to be fully integrated into the original choir.

King’s College has yet to release an official detailed statement about the new ensemble.
