This album is something else. I don't mean it's overly complex or hard to understand. I mean "something else" as if I can't believe someone made a project like this. Listening to 90 Beats per Minute by Cherry Makes Waves, I feel how people felt when Bjork came out. It's like Nelly Furtado working with Massive Attack. This record feels like a rebirth of chill music based on the vibes we had in the late '90s and early '00s. I feel like I'm at the beginning of something new and everlasting.
Cherry Makes Waves has an interesting voice that spills over the tops of these beats. This is one of the few times in my life I've been given the opportunity to predict how fame will soon center an artist The first time was with Janelle Monae back in 2008. Cherry Makes Waves and Janelle Moane don't make similar music, but listening to this five-song EP, you can tell that Cherry and the gang are ready for the big time.
Cherry Makes Waves comes from Latvia and has been a visual and audio artist who is diving into the depths to release a group of songs that are all locked at 90 BPM. Genres are just myths to Cherry. She doesn't center on anything like a genre on any of these 5 tracks. As stated by the artist:
"Cherry follows her heart, blending genres and breaking boundaries. Created as a global collaboration across Latvia, the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, and the US, the EP shows that even with the same tempo, each song hits in its own way."
Good news! This is exactly what they did. 90 Beats per Minute sounds incredible. I feel like anyone who told them they weren't ready was lying or jealous. It took Cherry Makes Waves only 5 songs to make their point and what a beautiful point it is.
Beginning at Spaceman, this track feels as if Annie Lennox was trying to make a comeback. The second track, Phaeton provides what I can only describe as "beautiful screaming." It's a very interesting and engrossing peace. The third song is titled BIG LEAGUE and Cherry Makes Waves is "tired of the toxic shit" and spells words on the track like a hip-hop artist. It is kind of a banger. Track four has the interesting title of Home (Complete). This could be for previous fans or something for new fans to think about. This track takes on a more Imogen Heap feel. It has phenomenal work on the backing vocals. The final track on this EP is the titular 90 Beats per Minute, which is all about love... if you can find it.
My Thoughts Going Forward
This is excellent work. I feel like I'm witnessing a group I will be hearing more about soon. Whatever "it" that a musician needs to move further up the loose steps of the music ladder, Cherry Makes Waves has got it. I encourage everyone with a streaming service to give 90 Beats per Minute a chance. This would be an excellent chance to jump in on the ground floor of something outstanding.
